CNC Turning

1. What is CNC Turning?

CNC Turning is a machining process used to make cylindrical parts, in which a cutting tool, typically a non-rotary tool bit, describes a helical toolpath by moving more or less linearly while the workpiece rotates. The tool's axes of movement may be literally a straight line, or they may be along some set of curves or angles, but they are essentially linear (in the nonmathematical sense). Usually the term "turning" is reserved for the generation of external surfaces by this cutting action, whereas this same essential cutting action when applied to internal surfaces (that is, holes, of one kind or another) is called "boring". Thus the phrase "turning and boring" categorizes the larger family of (essentially similar) processes. Commonly performed with a lathe, turning reduces the diameter of a workpiece, typically to a specified dimension, and produces a smooth part finish. A CNC turning center is a lathe with a computer numerical control (CNC). Sophisticated CNC turning centers can also perform a variety of milling and drilling operations.

Experience

Due to the many varied jobs, projects and industries we have worked across in the last 40 years, we have become industry leaders in many diverse areas such as: small hole drilling, aluminium machining and finishing, exotic metals machining, plastics, small batch runs, prototyping and project management, similarly we have vast experience in specialist fields such as biomed, medical, film, scientific, spray equipment to name a few.

Materials

At Arrow-link we can machine anything. From all types of aluminium, plastics, brass, copper, bronze, titanium, stainless steels and even the strangest most unpronounceable exotic and specialty metals. Anything that can be machined we’ve machined it. Particularly when it comes to machining aluminium, there are none better. Through many years experience working with Aluminium, we understand the intricacies of tooling, grade and finishing operations. We operate our own boutique anodising plant for in house anodising of high quality, high spec parts.

Software

Our CAD/CAM package can work directly with Parasolid, IGES, STEP, ACIS, DXF and DWG Files. Ensuring we can work with data from almost any supplier. Complex designs can simply be manipulated using our customers’ CAD data.
